Inspiration
Inspired by Korean traditional door wood-framing, Hanok Munsal (한옥 문살), I attempted to explore shadow casting from layers of patterned panels with incorporating modern materiality and styles.

2D Ideation
went on to 2D iteration stage where to explore form, consider inner mechanism, and user-engaging movement.
3D Ideation
After the form is decided, I started prototyping with using PETG plastic sheets and Laser cut masonite. I tested out how the light and shadow casting appear with and without folding the panels.
Process
I laser cut the plywood sheets (1/8" and 1/4" thickness) and used belt sander machine to make a chamfer for the edges in order for these six panels to meet perfectly 120 degrees. I hid metal hinges between the frames and made them to be folded with zig zag movement. I used black ink for the outer frames and dark walnut wood stain for the inner frames. Then, I used Polyurethane to finish them at last.
